Why don't we use Aspartame in Emergen-C?

If you look at the cheap Vitamin C on the supermarket shelves today, you will notice that many contain Aspartame.

The question we get asked more often than any other about Emergen-C is, does it have Aspartame in it? The answer is no, and we are glad that our buyers know to avoid Aspartame. However, for those that don't know, I thought I would explain why.

Much has been written on the internet about Aspartame. The short story is that in your body Aspartame breaks down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol, one molecule of each.

Aspartic acid is harmless; it’s broken down into alanine, an amino acid, and oxaloacetate, an organic compound..

Phenylalanine, an allergen to some people, is broken down into mostly tyrosine, an amino acid.

Methanol, aka wood alcohol, is broken down into formic acid (the toxin in ant bites) and formaldehyde which is a cause of cancer, among other things. Formaldehyde is also the stuff they stick body bits in to preserve them as it prevents oxygen getting to them. This same process of denying oxygen which makes formaldehyde a great preservative, has the effect of preventing your brain getting the oxygen it needs.

Needless to say, none of these effects are desirable, and that's why Emergen-C does not have and will never have Aspartame in it. We use good old fashioned sugar, or other safe alternatives.

So next time you're in the supermarket wondering if there is a good reason to not buy the £3 tub of orange flavour Vitamin C, remember it may be doing you just as much harm as good if it contains Aspartame. Then go home and have an Emergen-C instead!
