Does Emergen-C help stop colds?

It's late afternoon in mid October. Outside the sun's warm glow is slowly giving way to darkness. What little warmth the sun held quickly fades and gives way to a chilly autumn evening. A chill which will only grow over the coming winter months.

The average person experiences at least 1 cold every winter, with many suffering from as many as three or more. They range from so mild you don't notice them, to the sort where you are stuffed up in bed with a hot water bottle wishing it would just go away.

So can Emergen-C help prevent these before they happen, or help alleviate them once they do?

In 2007 the BBC reported that a study of 11,350 people, given only 200mg of Vitamin C per day could reduce the duration of colds by up to 8% in adults and 13.6% in children.

In those exposed to severe cold or physical stresses, vitamin C doses reduced the risk of getting a cold by half.

Furthermore, they say there is "tantalising" evidence from one study that very large doses of vitamin C taken at the beginning of a cold might have a useful effect.

All that from the forever sceptical BBC!

Twice Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling found that ascorbate (vitamin C) in a daily amount of 1,000 mg was repeatedly reported in controlled studies to decrease the incidence of colds by about 45%, and the duration by about 63%.

There is overwhelming evidence that taking a strong dosage of Vitamin-C helps hold off and shorten colds.

One sachet of Emergen-C per day is a tasty, fun, enjoyable way to take that vitamin C, for you and all of your family.
